The Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain

If you’re looking for an outdoor experience that literally elevates your perspective, head to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina to step onto one of the most distinct landmarks in the Eastern U.S.: the Mile High Swinging Bridge.

Suspended at an elevation of exactly 5,280 feet, this 228-foot footbridge has been a magnet for visitors since 1952. To be clear, “mile high” refers to its elevation above sea level rather than the drop beneath it. The bridge spans an 80-foot rocky chasm, but standing on the steel grates still delivers the thrilling, unforgettable sensation of floating among the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

📍 Why it’s worth the trip:

Spectacular Scenery: On a clear day, the 360-degree vantage point offers a sweeping, unobstructed look at the Carolina high country.
A Feat of Engineering: Originally built in the early 1950s and completely rebuilt with galvanized steel and reinforced cables in 1999, the bridge allows you to safely experience the rugged environment and sweeping winds of the summit.
Accessible Adventure: You don't need to be an expert backpacker to enjoy it. Aside from the short walk from the parking area, there is an elevator inside the Top Shop that takes you straight to the summit level, making this experience accessible to almost everyone.
The Elements: At this altitude, the weather commands respect. Winds can howl through the gorge, and temperatures run significantly cooler than the valleys below. Always dress in layers and check the mountain's weather conditions before you go.
